Quick Tip -- Prominently Display Your Location On Your Website
Wednesday, 16 February 2011 11:35

“You never get a second chance to make a first impression.”

I’m often critical of websites and one of my pet peeves is having to search for contact information.

Studio Owners Take Note: One of the best things you can do to market your studio is to prominently display your location and phone number on your website.

I recommend including your studio address in the header of EVERY page and also in the footer of EVERY page. Why? Because you never know where someone will land when they click through from a search page or another website. Not all searches land potential clientele on your home page or contact page. Depending on the search criteria, readers may land in the middle of your website and, if they can’t easily contact you, they’ll click off and go to the next site in the search results.

Are you making a good first impression? If not, take a few minutes today and add your studio location to your website’s header and footer.

Add A Facebook Like Button To Your Blog

By now you've most likely seen Facebook's 'Like' button on articles you've read on the web. We've recently added this plugin to our website which you can see directly above this article.

thumbsupA recent Mashable article, "What the 'Like' button means for web traffic," states that a Facebook user who 'Likes' your article has more than double the amount of friends than the average user. This is good for you because those users are more social or active, thus increasing your exposure on the web. It is reported that websites are experiening large increases in traffic specifically due to this social plugin.

Adding the button is easy, especially if you're running a Wordpress blog. Simply install a plugin and you'll be good to go. Here are a few plugins we found:

  • Like -- Supports multiple languages, gives a number of display options and can be shown at the top or bottom of a post, on pages and on the front page, all based on what settings you select.
  • Facebook Like Plugin -- Allows you to configure and display the button before and/or after each post and/or page, and whether or not you want the button to appear on your homepage.
  • Facebook Like Button -- Lots of customization options and you can preview the settings at real-time in the settings section. Multiple language support.
  • Facebook Like Button Plugin -- Provides a shortcode which allows you to indicate what posts to include a button on or not, in the post itself. You can also set default global options.
And for our Joomla users, a few extensions we tired and like:
  • Facebook Like Button Module -- A simple module that allows you to configure and output a Facebook "Like" button based on the configuration values specified by Facebook. The output is either as an iFrame or as FBML.
  • Nurte Facebook Like Button -- Plugin that displays Facebook Like Button into your Joomla site articles. The Like button lets a user share your content with friends on Facebook. When the user clicks the Like button on your site, a story appears in the user's friends' News Feed with a link back to your website.

So if you like this article, be sure to show us some love and click the "Like" button at the top of the article!

Life's Hidden Pictures

Where's WaldoMy daughter loves hidden picture books. She can easily spend hours searching for objects hidden in creatively-drawn landscapes.

We recently spent some time trying to find a funny looking man in a red and white striped shirt hidden in the pages of her book. We found him tackling pirates on the high seas, panning for gold during the Gold Rush, and rocketing through outer space.

We were particularly stumped with one of the puzzles and I suggested a small break so we could come back and search with fresh eyes. Of course, my daughter protested – her stubborn side showing her determination to “beat” the puzzle. After some convincing, she decided to take a break. Sure enough, we promptly found the answer upon our return.

Thinking back to that moment, I realize that hidden picture books are a lot like life. The answers we long to see are usually right in front of us but are sometimes obscured by our surroundings. It's not until we step back, take a break, and approach with fresh eyes that the solutions pop into focus.

Next time you long to find a solution to a problem, draw some inspiration straight out of a children's book. With some time and patience, the resolution will slowly emerge. Everything you need to succeed is right in front of you – you just need to find it.
